Dagana 15. maí–15. júní 2026 fór fimmta útgáfa Oceanus „Stórsjór“ fram á
Eyrarbakka. Um 35 listamenn frá ólíkum heimshornum komu saman í
sjávarþorpinu til að taka þátt í mánaðarlangri listamannadvöl sem lauk
með sýningum, gjörningum, tónlistarviðburðum, opnum vinnustofum og
fjölbreyttri dagskrá fyrir almenning.
Á aðeins fimm árum hefur Oceanus fest sig í sessi sem einstakur vettvangur fyrir samtímalist á Íslandi. Hátíðin er listamannarekið frumkvæði sem byggir á samveru, samstarfi og tengingu við staðinn. Á hverju ári umbreytist Eyrarbakki í lifandi samfélag listamanna þar sem ný verk, samtöl og vináttubönd verða til í nánu sambandi við sögu þorpsins, náttúru þess og íbúa.
„Eyrarbakki er minn jarðvegur – þar næ ég tengingu við rætur mínar og næ að næra þær til að vaxa og dafna. Stærsti draumurinn var þó alltaf að skapa jarðveg til listsköpunar fyrir fleiri en mig sjálfa; að deila þessum sögufræga og töfrandi stað með öðrum, vinna með samfélaginu og skapa vettvang þar sem fólk getur hist, lært hvert af öðru og byggt upp tengsl. Krafturinn sem myndast þegar fólk vinnur saman í sköpun og kærleik er ótrúlegur,“ segir Ásta Vilhelmína Guðmundsdóttir, stofnandi og listrænn stjórnandi Oceanus.
Oceanus hófst árið 2022 í samstarfi við Byggðasafn Árnesinga og hefur síðan vaxið sjálfstætt ár frá ári. Þátttakendur koma úr öllum geirum listanna, þar á meðal myndlist, ljósmyndun, vídeólist, tónlist, dansi, sviðslistum, gjörningalist og textíl. Á meðan á dvölinni stendur vinna listamennirnir saman, deila reynslu og þróa ný verkefni sem verða fyrir áhrifum af umhverfi, sögu, fólki og hver öðrum.
Sérstaða Oceanus felst í því að hátíðin er byggð á raunverulegum kynnum og gagnkvæmum áhrifum. Á Eyrarbakka myndast tímabundið samfélag þar sem listamenn og heimafólk deila tíma, samtölum, þekkingu og reynslu. Listamennirnir sækja innblástur í sögu staðarins, náttúruna, fólkið og hversdagslífið, á meðan íbúar og gestir fá innsýn í listrænt ferli sem er enn í mótun. Þannig verður til vettvangur þar sem listsköpun, samfélag og staður hafa áhrif hvert á annað.
Í tilefni af fimm ára afmæli Oceanus kemur jafnframt út ný bók sem rekur sögu verkefnisins frá upphafi. Bókin er um 100 blaðsíðna safn ljósmynda, sagna og hugleiðinga sem fangar andrúmsloft hátíðarinnar og þau tengsl sem hafa myndast í gegnum árin. Þar er fjallað um listaverkin, fólkið, samtölin og samfélagið sem hefur vaxið í kringum verkefnið og mótað það frá fyrstu hátíðinni.
Á hátíðinni var bókin kynnt og verður einnig fáanleg á sýningunni í Hafnarstræti. Allur ágóði af útgáfunni rennur til að standa straum af prent- og hönnunarkostnaði og stuðlar að því að varðveita sögu verkefnisins til framtíðar.
Heiti hátíðarinnar í ár, „Stórsjór“, vísar til ölduhæðar sjávar og er jafnframt myndlíking fyrir þá krafta sem verða til þegar fólk kemur saman til að skapa, deila reynslu og mynda ný tengsl. Á tímum þar sem menningarsamskipti og samvera skipta sífellt meira máli stendur Oceanus sem áminning um mikilvægi listamannarekinna verkefna og þeirra samfélaga sem gera þau möguleg.
Opnunarhátíð Oceanus „Stórsjór“ fór fram á Eyrarbakka 13. júní og tókst með miklum ágætum.

The festival celebrates its fifth anniversary with a retrospective exhibition at the SÍM gallery in Hafnarstræti and a book launch.

From 15 May to 15 June 2026, the fifth edition of Oceanus “Stórsjór” took place in Eyrarbakki. Around 35 artists from different corners of the world gathered in the seaside village to participate in a month-long artist residency that concluded with exhibitions, performances, music events, open studios and a diverse programme for the public. In just five years, Oceanus has established itself as a unique platform for contemporary art in Iceland. The festival is an artist-run initiative based on community, collaboration and connection to place. Each year, Eyrarbakki transforms into a vibrant community of artists where new works, conversations and friendships are formed in close connection with the village's history, its nature and its inhabitants.
“Eyrarbakki is my soil – there I connect with my roots and am able to nourish them to grow and thrive. The biggest dream, however, was always to create fertile ground for artistic creation for more than just myself; to share this historic and magical place with others, work with the community and create a platform where people can meet, learn from each other and build connections. The power that is generated when people work together in creativity and love is incredible,” says Ásta Vilhelmína Guðmundsdóttir, founder and artistic director of Oceanus.
Oceanus began in 2022 in collaboration with the Heritage Museum in Árnessýsla and has since grown independently year on year. Participants come from all sectors of the arts, including visual arts, photography, video art, music, dance, performing arts, performance art and textiles. During the residency, the artists work together, share experiences and develop new projects influenced by the environment, history, people and each other. The uniqueness of Oceanus lies in the fact that the festival is built on real encounters and mutual influence. In Eyrarbakki, a temporary community is formed where artists and locals share time, conversations, knowledge and experience. The artists draw inspiration from the history of the place, nature, the people and everyday life, while residents and visitors get an insight into an artistic process that is still taking shape. This creates a platform where art, community and place influence each other.
To mark the fifth anniversary of Oceanus, a new book is also being published that traces the history of the project from its inception. The book is a 100-page collection of photographs, stories and reflections that captures the atmosphere of the festival and the connections that have been formed over the years. It covers the artworks, the people, the conversations and the community that has grown around the project and shaped it since the first festival.
The book was presented at the festival and will also be available at the exhibition in Hafnarstræti. All proceeds from the publication will go towards covering printing and design costs and will help to preserve the history of the project for the future.
This year's festival title, “Stórsjór” (Heavy Seas), refers to the height of the ocean waves and is also a metaphor for the forces that are created when people come together to create, share experiences and form new connections. At a time when cultural exchange and community are increasingly important, Oceanus stands as a reminder of the importance of artist-run projects and the communities that make them possible.
The opening ceremony of Oceanus “Stórsjór” took place in Eyrarbakki on 13 of June, and was a great success.
