RED WAVES is about the emotions of the inner child within. Emotions which need to be listen too, need to be seen and believed. Our emotions are like the waves in the sea, sometimes big, sometimes small and sometimes hidden deep in our soul or unconscious mind.

Hildur Hákonardóttir

Eitt lífsins tré.

Innsiglingamerki hafa verið vegvísar sjómanna öldum saman. Suðurströndin er hafnlaus og hættuleg. Oftast eru merkin tvö og eiga misvísandi þríhyrningar þá að falla saman og bera að auki í fjallstopp eða áberandi kennileyti á landi til að vísa bátum rétt á lendingu. Skógartré hafa voldugt samskiptakerfi en manngert „tré“ miðlar líka mikilvægum upplýsingum og stuðlar að því að viðhalda lífi.

A tree of life.

Landing marks have guided sailors for centuries. The South Coast is mostly without harbours and therefore dangerous. The marks should be two triangles one turning up and the other down and preferably be backed up by a mountain top or another prominent landmark to direct the boats to the right landing. Forest trees have powerful communication systems but this „man made tree“ also conveys important information and contributes to sustaining life.

THE FISHING VILLAGE.

Photographs printed on sail cloth.

I walk around the small village.

Colorful houses and green spots, filled with wild flowers, fill my heart with joy. There are wonderful pathways between the houses.

I sense the stillness and the simmering sea.

Happiness is here.

Stafa bú (Letter Farm)

former seafood factory

typeface: Shrimp

The work refers to the title of the show and also to the former function of the exhibition place. Twelve persons living in Eyrarbakki were asked to write words beginning with each of letters of the title Dálitill sjór.

All 144 words are supposed to be set on the inner and outer walls of the building. The intension of „Stafa bu” is bringing personal associations toegether to create the imaginary universe based on inner images.

The non-swimmers Starting from origami folds intended for an installation, 7 color sketches on paper were made during my stay in Eyrarbakki, Iceland. Simple shapes. Cheerful colours. Comic. Tragic.
Crabs and heads in the water. No images that were created after reality. And yet reminding of drowning and present a superiority of crabs. Loosely based on the science fiction thriller "Der Schwarm" by Frank Schätzing.

The two video animations [MIRACLE MASTER] 2023 and [SOUTHERN END OF DAYLIGHT] 2023 are presenting a simulation of a non existent monitoring camera system. Both video animations are showing a seemingly unsignificant scenery, in which the cameras are slowly but insistantly sampling the unknown corners of our civilisation.

GODDIMON C

Raw pigment and acrylic on canvas

70x100cm

2023

This masked symbolic “God” forms part of a series of Gods from

a fictive island mythology from the island of Mauritius being

developed by the artist. This particular Goddimon ( God of the People)

mask is inspired by Eyarbakki and Iceland, and is the God of Harboring

and Resilience.

GHOST IN THE ORGAN

HD Video / 6m47s / 2023

Immersed for 3 days in the Oceanus Hafsjór art festival & residency, during my first trip to Iceland, I have attempted to document my experience and observations of the village of Eyrarbakki through historical impressions and the creative process of some of the artists in residence.

The title “ Ghost in the Organ” is inspired from Ingo Günther´s observation that the organ he obtained for the residency from Icelandic organ maker Björgvin Tómasson had a ghost in it.  ´Ghosts´ symbolically  (but also literally, from local stories told to me) refer to a linked history of the village, its people, the dream of a miracle harbour in Eyrarbakki, and the continued evolution of this historical village.

This short impressionistic documentary was created in collaboration with Ingo Günthers´ music & work as part of his residency,  and remains a work in progress as other performances and exhibitions take place in the next week.

Through Dálítill sjór, this almost calm wave in a small sea, we have harboured into Eyrarbakki & elements of Icelandic culture; the strong warmth of its people.

As the creative process is of importance to me, I  wanted to share it with the viewers and visitors of the exhibition in the hope they see not only the finished works, but a bigger picture of art, life and connections, celebrated.
