The sea, origin of life, the place where life started and we are a part of it. The Great Auk/Geirfugl from Iceland, just as the Dodo from my country, Mauritius has disappeared.

It’s not accidental but a action of human.

Title;

“Hafrót /Sea storm”

"Hafrót “ was inspired by the old skaldic poetry. It follows their enigmatic character  and metaphorical use of compound words. The letters were painted with tar on the wooden beam in the old harbor of Eyrarbakki. "Hafrót(Sea storm)” was translated into Icelandic by Guðrún Hannesdóttir. The font used, "Separat", was designed by Guðmundur Úlfarsson.

Fourty four gale-force winds throb in the nightgown-sails. Seasick fire- and sword-    swallowers fill Heavens.

Fallen sea-stars scare off murder of crows picking old salt from Ægir’s beard, crabs tickle His belly.

Landslag, ferðir, útsýni og síbreytileg birtan veittu innblástur við gerð verkanna en líka samvera og annar taktur í tilverunni á listahátíðinni Oceanus - Hafrót 2024. / A series of work made over a few days in September, in and around a caravan in Eyrarbakki. They are made with ink and color powder on pieces of linen canvas, paper roll and watercolour paper. Landscapes, journeys, views and the ever changing light provided inspiration but also togetherness and a different rhythm in existence at the art festival Oceanus_hafrot 2024.

A girl laughed and cried at the same time. Those tears made my heart ask, Where is home? Go home and dance. My heart did not think. 

“It is Iceland! I have to go to Iceland.”

I flew to Eyrarbakki, Iceland, and made a small room where I dreamt every night and poured out my memories and writings.

“We were being chased and running away. The friend I was running with was caught by a well. When I looked into the well, it was so deep and quiet. Was she caught in the silence? Ah! So deep and quiet……………..Ah! There is no time to lose my mind. I have to run away before I get caught. Because I haven’t been caught yet.” Dream in Iceland 2024 Sep

The souls that come and go infinitely dance as they move in and out of their bodies. Is the body the home of the soul? Is the body the path that the souls pass through? Home and path, road.. Can we see the dance of the souls that move in and out of the body, from the home to the road?

Perhaps the wind, the wind that passes through every corner of the body and spreads transparently in all directions, resonates with the dance of the souls? I waited the wind with the artists who capture Iceland's nature.

“Wind! Please use my body to show us the dance of soul.“

The waves that are driven by the wind are coming, and a seal is watching us from afar. Beyond the rough waves, I can hear the songs of some women. Ten million songs become the wind and penetrate the body. The curious camera presses the shutter humbly but dynamically, waiting to see if it can capture that wind path.

An Ancient Tome is Lore found within the Temple of Waves

Blessed strands of hair tangled untangled Knit & Woven.

Blessed strands of hair . Brushing. Braiding. Knitting, Weaving. An afternoon of intimacy.

Moments of singing. Caressing tresses. Reminiscent of the beauty of mothers and daughters.

Celebrate mothers and daughters … sing lullabies, brush, braid, caress strands of one another’s hair. Weave our minds and hearts together.

A performance inspired by a work from Ólöf Sveinsdóttir of Herdísarvík, which is exhibited in the Heritage Museum in Eyrarbakki.

"My name is Ocean", video projection & art performance, text written by me, paper boats, water.

As an artist I always tend to look at reality through a kind of deep and meaningful perspective, trying to dig under the surface of things.

For this project I focused on the parallel between the Ocean and human beings, as both can be calming and peaceful, but also very dramatic and dangerous.

The location I was assigned, the Potato House, was the perfect opportunity for me to convey in a more effective way this idea of resilience, perseverance, and travel through life.

The sun, moon, stars. I am the clear sky and the dark night, below and above the horizon. I am a tear, a drop in the Ocean. A warm embrace.

Drink your water, part 2

ÍSL: Náttúran birtist oft í andstæðum sem fegurð og eyðilegging, líf og barátta, sem standa hlið við hlið. Á þeim stundum má fanga þessar andstæður sem sýna hið viðkvæma jafnvægi vistkerfa og afskipti manna í umhverfinu. Það kraftmikla samband sem ríkir á milli undur náttúrunnar og ofsa hennar undirstrikar hvernig lífið aðlagast, heldur áfram og jafnvel blómstrar í mótlæti. Þessar senur fléttast saman og mynda vef andstæðna – á milli lífs og afkomu, fegurðar og eyðingar. 

Flókið samspil náttúrunnar birtist okkur skýrt og minnir á að við erum öll tengd umhverfi okkar. Hvort sem það er skær litadýrð kolkrabba, trylltur sjórinn, visið landslag í almenningsgarði eða barátta við skógarelda, þá tákna þessi augnablik hver viðleitni náttúrunnar til að halda jafnvægi í síbreytilegum heimi. Í gegnum þessa sýn erum við hvött til að njóta brothættu fegurðarinnar í heiminum okkar og að setja okkur í hlutverk verndara hennar.

The natural world often presents itself in contrasts, where beauty and destruction, life and struggle, coexist side by side. In these moments, there are snapshots of nature in action, revealing the delicate balance of ecosystems and human interaction. The dynamic relationship between nature’s wonders and its fury highlights how life adapts, survives, and even thrives amidst adversity.

These scenes come together to form a tapestry of contrasts—between life and survival, beauty and destruction. Nature’s complexity is on full display, reminding us that we are all interconnected with the environment. Whether it’s the vibrant display of an octopus, the angry churning of the sea, the dried-out landscape of a park, or the battle against wildfires, each one represents a moment in nature’s ongoing struggle to maintain balance in the face of change. Through this lens, we are urged to appreciate the fragile beauty of our world and to act as stewards in protecting it.

Research performance

Hera Fjord sviðslistakona vinnur að leikriti um sjókonuna, skipstjórann og Stokkseyringinn Þuríði Einarsdóttur, betur þekkt sem Þuríður formaður. Í samstarfi við butoh dansarann Gio Ju, býður Hera áhorfendum að taka þátt í rannsókninni. Í gegnum dans og texta, líkama og huga, könnum við persónuna Þuríði formann og heyrum sögu hennar. Öll velkomin á viðburðinn og þau sem þekkja sögu Þuríðar sérlega velkomin að mæta og taka þátt í samtali um líf Þuríðar og persónu. 

A woman angling fish

Performance artist Hera Fjord is working on a theatre play about the fisherwoman and sea captain from Stokkseyri, Þuríður Einarsdóttir, mostly known as Þuríður foreman. Together with butoh dancer Gio Ju, Hera invites the audience to participate in and observe her research. Through dance and text, body and mind, we will explore the character of Þuríður foreman and share her story with the audience. Everyone is welcome and we hope to meet people familiar with Þuríður, and for you to participate in the conversation about her life and character.

The disape rance of the lides, Caught in the transformation of the materials. What has been created here? An artistic work in Eyrarbakki, a mysterious place, carrier of natural materials, still above sea level. Invisible coordinates of found phenomena, brought together to form a wooden sculpture, a carrier of still-moving worlds. Three video animations represent the transfer between natural conditions and fictional claims. The approximate film coordinates are firmly buried in the time of the sea roots:

Tveir bræður á Eyrarbakka, þeir Gisli og Guðmundur

sáu fegurðina í því

að bjarga yfir hundrað ára gömlum trjádrumbum,

Basralocus,

frá því að eiga enga ævina meir.

Þessir eldgömlu trjádrumbar,

komnir alla leið frá Afríku eða Suður Ameríku

voru hífðir í saltann sjó

á áttunda áratuganum

og notaðir í svokallaða Tunnu í höfninni í Þorlákshöfn

þar til að höfninni var breytt árið 2024.

Nú hvíla þeir sig hér á Eyrarbakka undir vökulum augum bræðranna.

Two brothers from Eyrarbakki, Gísli and Guðmundur,                               saw the beauty in saving over a hundred-year-old timber,                    Basralocus,                                                                                                              from being lost forever.                                                                                        

These ancient logs,                                                                                               which came all the way from Africa or South America,                            were lifted into the salty sea in the 1970s and used in the so-called "Tunna" (Barrel) at the harbour in Þorlákshöfn until the harbour was renovated in 2024.   

Now, they rest here in Eyrarbakki under the watchful eyes of the brothers.

FSU Students

Verk nemenda úr Fjölbrautaskóla Suðurlands á listabraut undir áhrifum frá hafinu. Eftir samstarf á milli verkefnisins og aðstandenda skólans. Listamenn verkefnisins kynntu sig og hátíðina fyrir nemendum.

Works from students from FSU/ Sudurland College in Selfoss, studying arts inspired from the ocean. A collaboration between the festival and the school took place, where artists introduced themselves and the project for the young adults.

Ari Haukur Júlíusson

Aðalhugmyndinn með verkefnið var að sýna tenginguna milli hafsins og gullna sniðsins. Gullna sniðið er alltaf sýnt með skel. Myndin inniheldur sögu líka, skelin er fyrst á hafsbotni, önnur myndin liggur skelin skorin á borði og í þriðju myndinni er gullna sniðið rannsakað og glósað.

The main idea with this prjoect is to show the correlation between the sea and the golden ratio. The golden ratio is always shown in the nautilus shell form. The images shows a story. The first one is the shell on the bottom of oceon, the second is the sea shell on a table and has been cut in half, the third one is a sketch of the golden ratio and notes that have been written about it.

Myndirnar mín heita Hvalurinn og fiskarnir. Ég vann fjórar mismunandi tegundir af henni. Ég var aðal- lega að vinna með rule of thirds en fyrir utan það var ég aðalega að vinna án þess að hugsa of djúpt út í allt heldur bara gera í staðinn fyrir að hugsa. Þannig fannst mér koma meiri minn stíll.

My art pieces are called The Whale and the Fishes. I made four variants of the art piece. I was mostly working with rule of thirds but besides that I was mostly working without thinking too much what I was doing because I wanted to let my naturalistic style take hold instead of me forcing some style.

Langafi minn, hann Gunnar Gestson, málaði svipað verk sem hangir uppi í Barnaskóla Eyrarbakka og Stokkseyrar. Ég ákvað að endurgera hans verk í mínum stíl fyrir þetta verkefni. Hér má sjá Stokkseyra- fjöru, með bryggjunni og varnagarðinum.

My Great grandfather Gunnar Gestson painted a painting very similar to this one. I’ve decided to recreate the painting in my style for this project. Here you can see the coast of Stokkseyri, with the harbour and the rocks that surround the coast.

Ég ákvað að teikna hefðbundið “landscape” þar sem það er sjór og sól. Aldan býr til dramatík og

hreifingu. Ég er ekki hefðbundinn listamaður í mér en það sem ég hef er að ég er hugmyndarík svo ég ákvað að nýta mér það. Tvær myndanna voru klippimyndir og sú þriðja var gerð með túss.

I decided to draw a traditional landscape where there is sea and sun. The wave creates drama and fascination. I’m not a traditional artist in me, but what I do have is that I’m imaginative so I decided to take advantage of that. Two of the pictures were collages and the third was made with marker.

I wanted to do something related to dinosaurs, cause they fascinate me, but also a human.

The mermaid is a mix of human and the dinosaur plesiosaurus. I thought about what it would be like to be to be a human mind in an animals body, and tried to put that feeling down on paper.

Listaverk mitt sýnir bát á mismunandi stöðum. Fyrst í sjó með þara, svo inn í líkama með æðum og að lokum er báturinn í draumalandi með kolkrabbaörmum.

My artwork shows a boat in different places. First in the sea with seaweed, then inside the body with veins, and finally, the boat is in a dreamland with tentacles.

Listaverkin mín eru mjög innblásin af einu anime sem heitir Avatar the last air bender og eins og þú sérð er kona í öllum þessum listaverkum að stjórna vatninu í kringum sig og fyrir aftan hana er stór foss og tré. Fyrsta myndin sem ég gerði málaði ég og notaði pínu tré liti í, önnur var bara gerð með blýant og seinasta er gerð með túss.

My artworks are very inspired by one anime called Avatar the last air bender and as you can see is woman in all these artworks controlling the water around her and behind her is a big waterfall and trees. The first picture I made I painted and used a little coloured pencil in it, the second one was just made with a pencil and the last one was made with a marker and coloured pencil.

Artwork illustrates ocean treasure protected by the fishes. The Pearl represents beauty of the ocean that should not be mass harvested, fishes represent ocean life as its protector.

Ég ákvað að hafa smá sögu. Þetta byrjar á ankeri sem nýlent í sjónum hjá skipi sem var að stoppa. Svo yfir í það að vera skilið eftir í langan tíma. Ég lærði margt með leiðirnar sem ég notaði til dæmis smá meira um málningu, ég ætti ekki að nota þykkan túss með trélitum, æfði mig smá meira hvernig á að gera “contrast” með bara blýanti.

I chose to have a small story. It starts with an anchor that has just been used and then to being left alone for a long time. I learned how to use techniques better, I learned a bit more about painting, how I should not use a thick marker with a colored pencil drawing and also practiced a bit on how to use contrast in a pencil-only drawing.

Þetta verk segir sögu í gegnum myndir. Við sjáum líf manns breytast frá einföldum sjómanni í valdamikinn sjóliðsforingja. En eftir því sem hann verður mikilvægari verða litirnir í myndunum hans daufari. Þetta sýnir hvernig stríð getur breytt manneskju, gert hana minna hamingjusama og allt að því líflausa.

The decay of time

This art tells a story through pictures. We see a man’s life change from a simple fisherman to a powerful navy captain. But as he becomes more important, the colors in his pictures get dimmer. This shows how war can change a person, making them less happy and less full of life.

Verkið hefur mjög einfalda merkingu, þar sem þemað var sjór kom djúpsær strax upp í huga mér. Deep sea er hin raunverulega strönd og líka kvikmynd sem var innblástur í litríkan stíl og fallega úthugsaða sögu, ég setti kafara á sjávarbotninn með flassmyndavél til að taka upp fegurð hafsins og verur í myrkrinu. Vegna þess að ég vissi að myndavélin myndi ekki virka í sjónum, gaf ég henni töfrandi stillingar með því að bæta goðsagnaveru við í bakgrunni.

The work has a very simple meaning, since the theme was the ocean, deep sea immediately came to my mind. Deep sea is the real beach and also a movie that was inspired me by a colorful style and a beautifully thought out story, I put a diver on the bottom of the sea with a flash camera to record the beauty of the sea and creatures in the dark. Because I knew the camera wouldn’t work in the ocean, I gave it stunning settings by adding a mythical creature in the background.

Ég elska sólsetur en vissi ekki beint hvað ég vildi gera þannig ég fór að gúggla og datt þetta í hug.

Myndirnar eru allar frekar svipaðar en þó í mismunandi stílum og með mismunandi aðferðum.

I love sunsets but didnt know what I wanted to do so started googling and got this idea. Those three works are all pretty similar but in diffrent styles nand medhods.

I just wanted to draw mermaids that were happy and relaxed and also I wanted to work with the golden ratio in those works.
